"Some time after the marriage of James and Susannah they tenenated the same farm near Woodstown that was afterwards owned by our father, William Austin, and at present (1929) by his oldest son Henry W. Austin. This is the story that is told of her resourcefulness in times of stress. In the spring of 1778, Gen. Howe, sent a detachment of British soldiers into Salem Co. on a Foraging expedition. They halted at Sharptown and scoured the adjacent country for provinder. Susannah Borden had a crock or ferkin of butter already to take to the store. When she saw the approach of the soldiers and knowing of their object she seated herself on the lid of the butter-pot and spreading her skirts about it, so remained until they had gathered up what lard and cured meats, etc. they could find and had left the premises. After the death of her husband, she and her boys continued the farming business. She made her will August 18, 1815. In it she named her children and three grandchildren - all her namesakes: Susannah Lloyd, Susannah Hance and Susannah Woolley. To these three she made a bequest of a half dozen silver spoons apiece. The Will was proved Oct. 20, 1823."
