Lt John Mason

Xerox of family bible entries. 1790 Census of Kentucky.

Oct.19,1780 court hearing: John Mason took office as Lieut. to Capt. Fowle's Company of Spotsylvania Militia.

Bk #2, pg 155-Land office Frankfort, KY. Military Warrants # 3168: John Mason Sr. given 17 June 1784, 200 acres for service in Revolutionary War.

REF: File John Mason - Copy of will in full. Fayette Courthouse, KY 20Dec1826. Says that his son - William was not capable of caring for himself.

Member of Baptist church - Bryan's Station for 40 yrs.

LAND: Deed bk of Berkeley parish, Spots.,VA; ; ; ; 975.5365 N2c. NOTE: 22Dec1772 John & Anna of Spotsylvania Co. Peter Mason. 1772-85: 2 transactions. 1775-85 to Peter Mason: 4 transactions.

REF: Library of Congress newspaper files-Lexington Ky. Reporter Wed 11 May 1831 Died 11 Apr at Mr. George Hunts, John Mason Sr. aged 87 yrs - 7 mo." In letter from Hazel Mason Boyd she says, "John was closely associated with James Mason of Hanover Co. Va. In a will dated Aug 7, 1766, witnessed by Joseph & John Mason, a Peter Mason, died in St. Martins Parish & listed his brothers James, Benjamin, a wife Elizabeth, and children Peter, Edmund, George, Elizabeth and Sarah. One daughter married Edmund Singleton & took her brother Edmund Mason who was of feeble mind and came to Fayette Co. Ky about the time John Mason, Sr. came. When Edmund Mason died he named his cousin John Mason, Sr. as executor and a suit resulted in Fayette Co. Therefore, John had uncles named Peter, James and Benjamin.

WILL: abstract of one Samuel Warren of Spots.,Va. 1779 has as witnesses John & Peter Mason.

LETTER: from Mrs. Hazel Mason Boyd to Mrs. Joe Taylor 14 Apr 1964. "We think John Mason's father is William and that John was perhaps reared by his uncle James or uncle Peter. We know they lived in Caroline and Spotsylvania Co. and were people with land & slaves. We've been trying to prove Anna's father was Thomas Shirley of Spotsylvania Co. We have court records showing John was taxed when he was aged 29 and in 178_ he had several hundred acres land and 13 slaves. He was then about 40... We were unable to find a guardian settlement in Caroline Co where he was supposedly born. Family tradition says his mother died early and he was reared by his step-mother Elizabeth Armstong Mason. The fact that John named his eldest daughter Mary and several of his descendants carried the name of Elizabeth Armstrong makes the tradition seem logical. Court Order Book #3 p33 states that the Last will of Mary Mason of Caroline County was proved in court by William Mason, her husband and administrator. (John would have been age 2 at this time. Ibid p 35 states that the last will of Peter Mason was proved in court by Peter and Thomas Mason, 1747.

IBID:p 239 states William Mason has died leaving a widow Elizabeth Mason, and orphans John and Ann Mason, and another John Mason is appointed their guardian. In 1750 the word appointed is significant. Orphans over 14 had the pleasure of choosing guardians, those under 14 had guardians appointed. (John would have been aged 7 at the time and this seems to suggest Wm was his parent, but we can not prove it.)" John had a large acreage and 13 slaves before age 41 when he sold out in 1784 and moved to Kentucky. He bought a large farm near historic Bryan's Station." There is a possibility that although records of Spotsylvania were burned in the civil war, that all of the old records are on file in England.

LETTER: to T. Mason from Mr. Lawson Pearce says, "The most likely candidate as father of John Sr. is James Mason, guardian of Edmond Mason, per a Spotsylvania Co., Va. Court Book. The item in this book was forwarded 20/30 yrs. later to a court in Fayette Co, Ky and is among papers pertaining to lawsuit Edmond Mason vs. Edmond Singleton in 1804. Found here is a receipt given by Edmond Singleton to James Mason for estate of Edmond Mason. There's a copy of a will & inventory of Edmond Mason's father, Peter Mason (Died 1766), which was given to guardian (James Mason) by Clerk of Hanover Co. which are now found in state archives in Richmond, Virginia. These papers have a letter written by John Mason Sr. to his cousin Edmond Singleton. Singleton's 1st wife, Elizabeth was a sister of Edmond Mason. Edmond's brother Peter Mason was deceased and his widow Polly had married Thomas Ellis before lawsuit. Edmond Mason's will of 1808 is in Fayette Ky records. Left estate to cousin John Mason and named John Mason Jr. as executor. Lawson's letter is 8 pages long.

In an article repeating much of the same bibliograpy information is an additional paragraph which was written by his daughter, Charcilla Owings Mason, San Antonio, Texas for The Congressional Record, Oct. 19, 1925. "He was Douglas Elector for State at large in 1860; in 1861 took his family as refugees to Texas, expecting to return to Ky. to raise troops there to fight for the Confederacy; owing to ill health was unable to return; two years later at age of sixty two was able to serve with Texas State troops from Brenhem, Texas (Graybeards); died Aug 1865, on Mississippi River, near New Orleans; a few years later was removed with others, by order of Ky. Legislature, to the State Cemetery in Frankfort, Ky.; buried with civilians next to Beverly Clarke; but his name is inscribed on monument to Soldiers of Mexican War."

HYPERLINK-BIOGRAPHY: [ http://hans.wtblock.com/wtblockjr/thomas_deye_owings.htm ] "This article would be remiss without adding a paragraph about Major John Calvin Mason and his wife Ann Eliza Owings. Mason was born in Mount Sterling, Kentucky in 1802, and he graduated from Mount Sterling Law School and Transylvania College in 1823. From about 1826 until 1838, he owned and operated the Bourbon iron furnace. He served in the Kentucky House of Representatives for 2 terms. In 1846 he enlisted during the Mexican War in Col. Ben McCulloch's Texas Rangers, Worth's Division, under Gen. Zachary Taylor. Mason was wounded at the Battle of Monterrey and he was "appointed quartermaster with the rank of major following gallantry in battle in the field..."
While returning from the war, Mason stopped in Texas long enough to marry Ann Eliza Owings, T. D. Owings' daughter, in San Antonio in 1847; the newlyweds soon returned to Kentucky. Mason was elected to the 31st, 32nd, and 35th U. S. Congresses, and he was an elector to the Democratic National Convention in Charleston in 1860. When Mason found himself so close to the Ohio River while living in a slave state in 1861, he moved his family to Brenham, Texas. Already age 60, Mason served the Confederacy in the Brenham Graybeards of the Texas State Troops in 1863. In 1864 his wife Ann Eliza Mason died, leaving a houseful of infants and children, and she was the last Owings family member to be buried in Brenham. Mason died aboard a steamship at New Orleans in 1865, and Kentucky brought his remains back to the State Cemetery in Frankfurt. Afterward, their oldest daughter brought her siblings back to Kentucky to live."
