Biographical History of Nodaway and Atchison Counties Missouri 1901, Lewis Publishing Co. state that "When a young man, John A. Gex engaged in the mercantile business and in flatboating to New Orleans, but after his marriage has since given his attention to agricultural pursuits. He has always been one of the most prominent and influential citizens of his community and during the dark days of the Civil War was never molested by the southern sympathizers, being one of the few Kentuckians able to buy firearms in either Cincinnati or Louisville. Prior to the Civil War he owned many slaves, but was a strong Union man and took no part in the struggle. Some of his slaves were drafted, but he paid for their substitutes."
