MARRIAGE-RESEARCH-QUESTION: Date of 29 Dec 1797 would make wife age 15 at marriage!
WILL: January 1824; Overton County, Tennessee Deed Book I, p. 156; William Overstreet, Sr. gave Nancy Neely, due to parental love and affection, 3 slaves. Source states that Nancy is still living as of January 1841 and lives in Overton Co., Tennessee. Transaction witnessed by John Overstreet and Hawkins Neely.
IGI information list Nancy Overstreet marrying Robert Neeley on 29 Dec 1797.
WILL-RESEARCH: Overton County, Tennessee Deed Book J, page 391. Another source states that the Deed Book is K. Need to check both sources again for correct deed book. The will was dated 2 Oct 1847 and was probated 6 Jan 1848.
SOURCE: John Sevier (aka Jack) kept a ledger of names and dates. His notation on Lafayette stated that Lafayette died 20 August 1849, age 24 years, 3 mo, 5 days.
CENSUS: 1850 Overton Co., Tennessee Census as being 18 years old. His personal worth was $3,000. An inventory of his estate can be found: Overton Co., Tennessee, Inventories of Estates, June 1848-Apr 1861, Microfilm #21, page 169. John Sevier was his administrator. This John Sevier was the one married to Joel's aunt, Rhoda Overstreet Sevier, not his grandfather, the John Sevier that was governor of Tennessee.

MARRIAGES: Pixy-Lynn Morgan indicates found a marriage entry for a John Overstreet who married an Elizabeth Henry in Rhea County, Tennessee on 13 Sep 1810. Elizabeth Henry was the second wife of John Overstreet. Don't know who the first wife was. She would have been the mother of Joannah W. Elizabeth Henry only had one child, William Preston Overstreet. Martha Holman was the third wife and she was the mother of his third child, Rebecca Borden Overstreet. The entry for John Overstreet and Elizabeth Henry marriage came from Early East Tennessee Marriages, Vol. 1--Grooms, by Byron & Barbara Sistler, c1987, pg. 279....John Overstreet married Elizabeth Henry 13 Sep 1810 in Rhea Co., Tennessee.
William Preston Overstreet stated in the Federal Census records that both of his parents were born in Virginia. Since the Holmans were from North Carolina, this information tends to confirm the idea that William and his sister, Joanah, were children from a "first" marriage situation. However, due to the Rhea Chancery Court records concerning the estate of John Henry, Elizabeth's father, we now know that Joannah is not Elizabeth's child.
1997 Sep. Found proof of two marriages for John Overstreet. Microfilm 0985333 from Salt Lake Library. Jackson County, Tennessee Chancery Court Records. First folder, Overstreet Holman, et al vs Thomas H. Butler, et al; admr. to Henry Sadler. Deposition of Nancy Burris. She stated "I live four miles from John Overstreet. I have known the family before his death and into the present time." She was asked, "State how many children John Overstreet had at the time of his death and how many of them were by his last wife, Martha." Her answer: "He had three W. P., Joannah, and Rebecca. Two by the first marriage and one by the last. "I know from the Tennessee Supreme Court Records that John (Jack) Sevier, admr. of John Overstreet's estate and brother-in-law to John, stated that Rebecca was Martha's child. It is now apparent that when John Overstreet moved from Rhea County to Overton County he had a wife, Elizabeth, and two children, Joannah and William Preston. Why they let the situation continue where people were led to believe that Joannah was Elizabeth's child isn't known at this time. We are at a loss as to who is Joannah's mother.

NAME: Pixy-Lynn believes that Mrs. John Overstreet was....Elizbeth Henry...a John Overstreet married an Elizabeth Henry in Rhea Co., TN on 13 Sep 1810. The time frame is right, and it is likely that John traveled to the southern part of Tennessee with his Borden relatives as they dispersed from Knox Co., TN during the period 1806-1812. John does not show up in the Overton Co., TN area until after his father and brother do.

Information from Nancy Sevier Madden indicates that John Sevier drew a War of 1812 Pension.

SOURCE: Pixy-Lynn states that William Sherrill lived in Roane and Bledsoe counties. He was the executor to his father's estate.
Deposition given by William Tipton. He states that William and Rebecca had two children: John Sherrell and Elizabeth Sherrell. He stated that Elizabeth Sherrell lived in Monroe Co. (TN) and that John Sherrell lives in either MS or AL. The deposition was dated 23 Jan 1841.
CHILDREN: Knox Co. TN Court Minutes, Vol. 17, p68. Deposition taken of William Tipton, concerning her children. The deposition was dated 23 Jan 1841. Mr. Tipton stated.. That Rebecca and William Sherrell had two childen, Towit: John and Elizabeth Sherrell, that he knows them well, and Elizabeth Sherrell lives in Monroe Co., TN and John Sherrell lives either in Alabama or Mississippi as he is informed.

Husband of Mrs. Ella M Carpenter of 6227 Stearns St., Riverside. Father of Mrs. Marguerite Easton of Riverside; Mrs Zulla Mabel Mack of Red Bluff, CA; and Mrs Cecil May Johnson of Riverside. Brother of Miss Zulla May Carpenter of Omaha, NE; Clarence Carpenter of Hawthorne, CA; Mrs. Bessie DeWolf of Bell Gardens, CA; Mrs Dean Watson of NE; Mrs Mary Sims and Taylor Carpenter, both of Maywood, CA; and Mrs Hazel Miller of Chester, NE. Also survived by 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Services will be conducted Firday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the M.H. Simons and Co. chapel. Rev. Robert B. Wierbach officiating. Interment in Green Acres Memorial Park."
