Bernhard Borden Bundesman Sr. VERO BEACH, FL -- Mr. Bernhard Borden Bundesman, Sr., 87, died Saturday, August 24, 2002 at his home in Vero Beach. A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 29, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Place, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends following the service in the Parlor. Bernhard B. Bundesman, Sr., retired as President and CEO of deHavilland Aircraft of Canada. Mr. Bundesman's career involved shipbuilding and participation in a number of important military and commercial aviation developments, as well as other successful business ventures. His aviation career began in 1934 with Douglas Aircraft Corporation during initial production of the DC-3 Aircraft. Immediately prior to WWII, he joined the Shipbuilding Division of Bechtel, McCone, Parsons Company and at age 26, he was the youngest liberty ship hull superintendent in the United States. Transferring to the Aircraft Division of Bechtel, McCone, Parsons, he headed Assembly Operations in Heavy Modification of Ford Manufactured B-24 Bomber Aircraft. Later he accepted a position with Bell Aircraft, Marietta, Georgia, and held senior manufacturing positions in the production of the B-29 Bomber. At the end of WWII, he was responsible for Plant Clearance and Disassembly Operations at the Marietta plant. Early 1951, Bundesman was among the first to join the Lockheed Georgia Company in Marietta at the start-up of the B-47 Bomber Program and he held a number of high level positions at Lockheed. He headed the Jetstar Corporate Aircraft Marketing Program at the time he accepted the Presidency of Hawker Siddeley International, a U.S. subsidiary of the multi-national U.K. based Hawker Siddeley Group. At H.S.I., Bundesman was responsible for marketing and technical support of certain H.S.G. aircraft, industrial electrical equipment and larger and smaller stationery diesel engines manufactured by the Hawker Siddeley Group. At Hawker Siddeley International, he directed introduction of the highly successful H.S. 125 Business Jet into North America and established marketing, engineering and product support systems throughout the hemisphere. In 1970, he was elected President of deHavilland Aircraft of Canada, also a Hawker Siddeley Group Company, specializing in the manufacture of passenger and utility aircraft. During his tenure at deHavilland, the fifty (50) passenger Dash 7 Aircraft was put into production and operated world-wide. Since his retirement, Mr. Bundesman had variously served as Advisor, Consultant and Director to companies in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. He was a long time member of the Wings Club in New York City and a former member of the national Aeronautical Society and the Canadian American Club. Prior to his retirement he was a member of the Canadian Institute of Science, Director Canadian Aircraft Industries Association, British American Club, Canning Club (London) and Latin American Club. Mr. Bundesman is survived by his wife of 68 years, Leocadia; daughter, Geraldine Cisarik and husband, Tom, of Darien, Illinois; son, Bernhard B. Bundesman, Jr., and wife, Anna, of Charlotte, North Carolina; 9 grandchildren, Ashley, Doug, Alex, Alisha, Lauren, Caroline, Kendall, Lindsey and Courtney; and 5 great-grandchildren, Logan, Landon, Caitlyn, Hailey and Jimmy. Mr. Bundesman was preceded in death by his grandson, Jimmy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Charlotte Salvation Army.
