Lloyd Wilson Borden

Lloyd graduated from Holdrege High School.  He was active in the Band, playing Saxophone and Clarinet.  He then attended Kearney State College for three years where he met and married Aileen who graduated from Kearney State College.  They moved to Denver about 1944.  Lloyd opened an automobile repair shop and Aileen worked as a substitute school teacher in the Denver Public Schools.  Lloyd worked until his health began to fail.  He enjoyed working on cars for more than 35 years.  The day of his death he had just watched the Nebraska Corn Huskers Football team (Big Red One) beat their opponent on television.


Aileen Alberta Katzenmeyer-Gross

Aileen was adopted and raised by Charles and Laura Gross in Kearney, Nebraska.  Both Charles and Laura are buried in Kearney.

OBITUARY:    Aileen Borden, 95, was born at the Florence Crittenton Home, Denver, Colorado, February 17, 1912 to Elinor Eva Katzenmeyer, who is deceased. Mrs. Borden died peacefully in Colorado Springs, Colorado, June 11, 2007
   Aileen lived in Georgetown, Colorado with her mother and grandmother who made breakfast and dinner for the many miners in the area. Aileen was very familiar with the “Georgetown Loop" and had many stories about which to tell her children. When about 7 years old, Aileen was adopted by Charles N. and Laura (Simpkins) Gross who lived in Kearney, Nebraska. Aileen graduated from Kearney High School in 1931. She then attended Nebraska State Teachers College and graduated in 1935. She taught school in Farmington, New Mexico for several years before returning to Kearney where she had earlier met Lloyd Wilson Borden who also attended Nebraska State Teachers College.
  Aileen and Lloyd, who is deceased, were married August 10, 1944 in Kearney, Nebraska. They moved to Denver, Colorado in 1945 where all their children were born. Aileen continued teaching in the Denver area for several years before teaching part time as a substitute teacher for Denver Public Schools. She also taught Sunday school at Washington Park Congregational Church. Aileen enjoyed ice cream, bird watching, gardening, reading, the mountains, ice cream, traveling, and her trips to Hawaii and Australia, children, grand children and great-grandchildren and ice cream. (Yes, ice cream!)
  Aileen leaves six children; Charles (Jean), Lee (Diane), Carolyn, Vernon (Valori), Louise, Robert (Linda); twelve grand children and eight great-grand children.

Velma Viola Borden

Velma "Vee" Viola Peterson, 87, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at the Methodist Memorial homes in Holdrege, Nebraska. Funeral services will be conducted from the Nelson-Harris Funeral Home, Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997 at 2 P.M. with the Rev. Donald Leff officiating. Interment will be in theIndustry Cemetery, Atlanta, NE.
She was born south of Atlanta in Phelps County, the third of 13 children. She graduated valedictorian with the Atlanta High School Class of 1928. She received her teaching degree from the Kearney College and taught one year at Edison.

The Organist for services was Elna Nyberg, Soloist, Marlin L. Jones, Pallbearers, Ken Ohrt, Joel Bergman, Mike Borden, Brian Borden, Scot Borden and Jeff Borden.

Aunt "V" always sent birthday cards for EVERY birthday - we'll miss you, Aunt "V"!

Edna Merle Borden

Edna Merle VanDyke, 78, formerly of Holdrege, died Monday, Nov, 30, 1998at the Crete Manor, Crete. Funeral services will be conducted from theNelson-Harris Funeral Home Friday, Dec. 4 at 10:30 A.M. with the PastorDixon Powers of the Presbyterian Church in Orleans officiating. Intermentwill be in the Bainbridge Cemetery in Harlan County.
She was born Oct. 6, 1920 in Atlanta, the seventh of 10 children ofSidney and Myrtle (Johnston) Borden. The family lived in Atlanta until1930 when they moved to Holdrege.
She graduated from Holdrege Public Schools in 1938 She was active in bandand chorus in junior high and high school. She took two years of normaltraining and did practice teaching in a small school north of Holdrege.She played on Mrs. Skoog's professional women's basketball and softballteams while in high school.
On May 4, 1940 she married Albert "Dan" Vandyke. They spent the first twoyears of their marriage on a dairy farm in Missouri before returning toHoldrege where their three children: Stephen, Gloria and Dan were born.They lived in Holdrege and on a farm south of Holdrege until herhusband's death in 1983. She continued to reside at their home inHoldrege until 1995, when she moved to Methodist Memorial Homes.
Mrs. VanDyke was employed as a secretary and sewing instructor at SingerSewing Machine Company, cashier at Safeway, cook and waitress at Bauer'sCafe and floater and inspector at Becton Dickinson.

  Mrs. VanDyke was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher at thePresbyterian Church in Holdrege.  She also sang in the church choir.  Shewas a 4-H, Campfire Girls and Cub Scout leader.  She was active in theEagles, American Legion and V.F.W. Auxiliaries in Holdrege and waselected district president of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.  She was also in theHoldrege Senior Center Band and Chorus and played electronic keyboardwith the group.
  She was an active supporter of all Holdrege athletic teams and a fanof Big Red football and basketball.
  She is survived by her two sons:  Steve Bruce VanDyke and his wife,Michele of Crete and Danny Ross VanDyke and his wife, Elizabeth Jean ofBenkelman, NE.; her daughter, Gloria Melbye and her husband, Ron ofWaverly; eight grandchildren:  Deborah Reiss and her husband, Paul, KellyDodd and her husband, Thad, Steve Morgan VanDyke, Michael Melbye and hiswife, Darcy, Jennifer, Rebecca Melissa and Christopher VanDyke; fivegreat grandchildren; a brother, Buell Borden and his wife, Elizabeth ofLong Beach, CA; two sisters:  Ada Steel and her husband, Carl and CarolBinns all of Holdrege; and numerous nieces and nephews.
  Besides her husband, Albert in March of 1983, she was preceded indeath by her parents, three sisters and three brothers.
  Mrs. VanDyke will lie in state at the Nelson-Harris Funeral Home inHoldrege, Thursday form 9 A.M. until 9 P.M.

OBITUARY: Published in the North Platte Telegraph on 11/20/2007.
    Evelyn Virginia Douty, 87, of North Platte, passed away Nov. 18, 2007, at Centennial Park Retirement Village.
    She was born April 9, 1920, at Sutherland to Dewey and Mary Wisemiller Johnston. Evelyn graduated from Sutherland High School in 1939 as valedictorian. She received a scholarship at Grand Island Business College then worked as a bookkeeper for Alexander Furniture Company in Grand Island.
    On Jan. 18, 1942, she was united in marriage to Willard Mellroy Douty at the Presbyterian Church in Sutherland. The couple lived in Grand Island, Hastings and Palmer before moving to Paxton in 1946. The next year they moved to North Platte where she worked as a bookkeeper and then as City Clerk. Later they moved to Omaha where she was employed by Olsen Drapery Service as a seamstress and was commissioned to make the drapes for the White House. In 1972, they moved to LaMonte, Mo., where they were house-parents at the Show-Me Christian Youth Home.
    Willard passed away on Aug. 28, 1975. She stayed at the Youth Home until a replacement was found, and in 1977, moved back to North Platte to live with her children, Wilma and Mike. She was a charter member of the Valley Christian Church, an avid musician, being an organist at the church.
    Survivors include her children Nancy (Don) Titus, Wilma Douty, and Mike Douty all of North Platte, Bob (Rojean) Douty of Irving, Texas, Dennis (Carol) Douty of Seward, Larry (Janice) Douty of Belton, Mo.; three sisters, Miriam Crosby of Anaheim, Calif. and Ruth Crosby of Tucson, Ariz., and Mary Louise Warner of North Platte; two brothers, Warren (Phyllis) Johnston of Riverside, Calif., and Byron (Jan) Johnston of Omaha; sisters-in-law, Joan Johnston of North Platte and Betty Johnston of Omaha; 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and foster children.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers, Marvin, Arthur and Duane Johnston.
    Memorials are suggested to the Valley Christian Church or the Show-Me Christian Youth Home in La Monte, Mo.  The Centennial Park Retirement Village staff and caregiver, Greg Murdie, were special to her and her family.
    Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2007, at the Valley Christian Church with burial at the Riverview Cemetery at Sutherland.
    Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel and before the services at the church.
