Jonathan was visiting his brother John Virgil in Elmore City. They were getting ready to go hunting when one of the loaded rifles fell over and discharged hitting Jonathan in the thigh and shattered the bone. Upon seeing the damage that was done, Jonathan amputated his leg there in the kitchen and they buried the leg in the backyard. When he died a few days later from blood poisoning, they dug the leg up and buried it with him. He is buried in the same cemetery as John Virgil, this all happened in 1908.
